The best lawn care service foley, al and gulf shores, al

Spring is just around the corner in South Alabama, have your prepared your lawn? If your lawn in Foley, AL lacks the proper care required in spring, you could end up costing yourself more throughout the season. Your lawn will require more than just occasional mowing to maintain a healthy look. It is important to clear your lawn of excessive thatch and apply pre-emergent herbicides to your lawn, just to name a few. Here are a few additional tips to keep your lawn looking healthy this season.

Mowing Height

Raise your mower! Raising the height of your mower, allowing no more than 1/3 the total height of the grass to be cut, should promote your lawn to grow healthier and build a deeper root system. A lush/tall lawn will shade out some weeds and be more droughts resistant. Yards in the Foley and Gulf Shores, AL area typically consist of Bermuda, Centipede, St. Augustine, and Zoysia, which should be mowed at a height of 2-1/2 to 4 inches tall. Your lawn may need to be mowed as often as twice a week during the peak of the season. Shorter mulch clippings will not cause as much thatch in the long run as smaller clippings breakdown quicker, adding needed nutrients back to the soil.

Lawn Maintenance

During the spring, it is important to perform the proper lawn maintenance required to give your lawn the boost it needs for the season. I personally use Scotts Bonus S during the spring to help feed my lawn and to kill the rest of the weeds that I have been pulling since they emerged. Once the application is complete, I typically see results within the first 7-10 days as weeds begin to turn yellow and die off. In addition to the weed control, I apply four applications of Milorganite fertilizer to give my yard a health deep green appearance.

Proper Watering

Watering your lawn properly will allow your lawn to remain healthy throughout the season and to fight off unwanted weeds. Watering early in the morning will provide better results as this will allow your lawn to dry out during the day. Your lawn should receive 1” of water each week, which is equivalent to two 20-30 min watering cycles each week.

Lawn Care Tips – Foley, AL | Gulf Shores, AL | Orange Beach, AL

Lawn Care Tips

Keeping up with your neighbor and his lawn requires a lot of work. Unfortunately, there is not a simple formula to achieving a great lawn, it will take some work. As a homeowner, and as a professional in the lawn care industry, I would like to provide you with a few tips to achieving your own perfect lawn.

Watering

One of the most important rules to maintaining your Foley or Gulf Shores, AL lawn is proper watering. Your lawn needs to absorb at least 1”-1 ½” of water per week, during all seasons. A deep watering of your lawn 2-3 times per week, rather than daily, will encourage your grass to have a deeper root system. During the intense summer heat in the South Baldwin County area, you may need to water more, due to evaporation and heat stress on your lawn.

Proper Mowing

Mowing your lawn really low to keep from mowing often is not recommending. Your lawn needs to be cut at least once a week during the heavy growing season, if not more. It is important to cut no more than 1/3 of the grass blade in a single mow. Cutting more than 1/3 of the grass blade will stress your lawn preventing your lawn from funneling necessary nutrients to the root system. Consistently mowing your lawn at your mowers lowest setting will force your lawn to continuously be in recovery mode.

Weed Control

Controlling weeds in your lawn can be a difficult task if not properly managed. One of the best techniques to preventing weeds in your lawn is by having a thick and healthy lawn. Weeds are often found in lawns where the grass is the thinnest. Proper weed control applications in early spring and fall can be applied to help stop weeds before they appear in your yard.

Fertilization

A healthy lawn not only looks great, but will also saving your weed control bill. Properly fertilizing provides your lawn with much needed nutrients to allow the grass to grow thicker and healthier during the growing season. I personally use 4 applications per year of the slow release organize fertilizer Milorganite. Following the plan outlined on the back of the bag promoted a healthy, lush, and green lawn all season long.
